Mimosa Hills Country Club

 Morganton, North Carolina

By Michael J. Fay

Forty-five minutes east of Asheville, nestled among the foothills of the Smokey Mountains lies a sleepy, happy town, Morganton, North Carolina. In this burgh is a Donald Ross creation of 1928, The Mimosa Hills Country Club. Mimosa Hills is a course that was built in 1928 and groomed by its local and proud members for the past 74 years. It is the classic town center Club, conveniently located and the gathering place for the local business people and their families. The membership has not been and is not wealthy, excepting for the memories of the triumphs and failures on the golf course.

Over the years the course began to show its age. Trees had encroached on many of the playing area, causing some agronomic problems and rerouting the original play lines for the course. The bunkering had started to migrate and lose form and the surfaces of the greens became somewhat questionable. In essence, the course had grown tired.

The leadership of the Club got together in 2000 and started to plan the restoration of the course. The stress was on restoration, as the Club Officers and Membership were well aware of the original Ross holes. They were still on the property. Over the years there were a few minor changes but for the most part Mimosa Hills remained true to its original design and features.
